On July 22, the Brain-Computer Interface Industry Development Conference was held in Nanjing. Zhou Hongbo, member of the Standing Committee of Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee and Secretary of Nanjing Municipal Party Committee, Li Zhongjun, Vice Governor of Jiangsu Province, and Tan Zhemin, President of Nanjing University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) attended and delivered speeches. Cheng Heping and Zheng Hairong, Academicians of the CAS participated the conference.
Brain-computer interface, as a cross-frontier technology that enables information interaction between the brain and external devices, has become an important future industrial track contested globally. Jiangsu and Nanjing have established early layouts in related fields with strong advantages in scientific and technological talents. They are at the forefront of research and development in brain-like computing and other areas, with vigorously developing related industries, providing a good foundation for cultivating the brain-computer interface industry.
Li Zhongjun congratulated the conference on behalf of the provincial government. He stated that advanced planning for future industries such as brain-computer interfaces is a concrete measure to "take the lead in promoting the integration of technological innovation and industrial innovation." Jiangsu has strong brain science research capabilities, a solid foundation in the biomedical industry, and abundant medical institution resources. The province will adhere to innovation-driven and application-led approaches, strengthen forward-looking planning and systematic advancement, accelerate the construction of a deeply integrated innovation system of "industry-academia-research-medical", and promote the brain-computer interface industry to achieve platform synergy, institute-enterprise integration, mechanism innovation, and ecosystem creation, striving to seize the commanding heights of future industries.
Zhou Hongbo said that brain-computer interface is an important field for developing new quality productive forces. Nanjing will earnestly implement President Xi Jinping's important discussions on new quality productive forces, implement brain-computer interface industry innovation breakthrough actions toward 2030, focus on enhancing technological source supply, accelerate industry-technology integration, promote the gathering of innovation entities, advance inclusive and prudent regulation, and promote the deep integration of government, industry, academia, research, and medical sectors, concentrating efforts to build a national brain-computer interface industry highland. He looks forward to close cooperation between universities, research institutes, enterprises, and institutions to win the future in the new track of the brain-computer interface industry.
Tan Zhemin stated that Nanjing University will actively align with provincial and municipal industrial layout needs, fully leverage its scientific research foundation and interdisciplinary advantages, effectively integrate disciplinary strengths, inforce basic research and core technology breakthroughs, continuously make breakthroughs in brain-computer interface models, chips, algorithms, and other aspects, and fully play the role of a high-level research university as a source of innovation and talent pool, injecting continuous and powerful momentum into the development of the brain-computer interface industry in Jiangsu and Nanjing.
The conference released the "Nanjing Action Plan for Promoting Brain-Computer Interface Industry Innovation Breakthroughs (2025-2030) (Draft for Comments)", launched the Jiangsu Province Brain-Computer Interface Common Innovation and Industry Service Platform, and announced a batch of brain-computer frontier technology achievements including the nation's first domestically produced invasive deep brain electrophysiological acquisition and regulation integrated product. The NJU Brain-Computer Interface Research Institute, Jiangsu Brain-Computer Interface Research Institute, and Nanjing Brain-Computer Interface Innovation Consortium were unveiled, and the Jiangsu Brain-Computer Interface Industry Alliance was established. A batch of industrial projects were signed.
Leaders of Jiangsu Provincial People's Government and Nanjing Municipal People's Government, as well as representatives from universities, medical institutions, and enterprises attended the conference.
