Thematic activities of reviewing spirit of President Xi Jinping's important letter replying to young scholars returned after overseas study hold at NJU

On August 29, a special event to review the spirit of President Xi Jinping's important letter replying to young scholars returning after overseas study was held on Suzhou Campus of Nanjing University. The event was attended by Cao Weixing, Member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Deputy Director of the Committee on Education, Science, Health and Sports, Vice President of the Western Returned Scholars Association (Overseas-Educated Scholars Association of China), and former Vice Minister of Natural Resources; Hu Guangjie, Member of the Standing Committee of Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee and Director of the United Front Work Department; Tan Tieniu, Chair of NJU CPC Council and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; and Liu Jiaping, Professor at Southeast University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

On May 18, 2022, on the eve of NJU's 120th anniversary, President Xi Jinping replied to NJU-based young scholars returned after overseas study, encouraging faculty and students to consciously pursue serving the country and the people, to make new achievements in fostering virtue through education and boosting China's strength in science and technology, and lead by example in strengthening confidence in Chinese culture and telling well China's stories.

Cao Weixing pointed out that President Xi Jinping's important reply letter is not only an earnest expectation for NJU-based young scholars returned after overseas study but also a heartfelt message and great encouragement to all overseas-educated individuals. Only by deeply understanding the rich connotations of the spirit of President  Xi Jinping's important reply letter and effectively transforming his care and expectations into motivation and responsibility for continued struggle can we fulfill our mission and achieve new accomplishments on the new journey. He hoped that overseas-educated individuals would cultivate patriotism, uphold their original aspiration to serve the country, bravely explore scientific frontiers, fulfill educational responsibilities, firmly maintain self-reliance and self-confidence, and tell China's story well. Organizations at all levels of the Western Returned Scholars Association should continue to deepen their study and implementation of the spirit of President Xi Jinping's important reply letter, transform this spiritual strength into practical actions, continuously innovate service models, build broader platforms for overseas-educated individuals, and write a new chapter of serving the country through overseas study on the new journey.

Hu Guangjie pointed out that holding this special event is a re-learning and re-understanding of the spirit of President Xi Jinping's important reply letter, and a re-mobilization and re-encouragement for overseas-educated individuals across the province. Overseas-educated individuals in Jiangsu should persist in continuous learning, deeply understand the core principles, contemporary connotations, and practical requirements of the spirit of the important reply letter; promote the fine tradition of serving the country through overseas study; serve as the main force for innovation and creation, a think tank for offering suggestions, and a bridge for foreign exchange; and continuously gather strong momentum for advancing the Jiangsu practice of Chinese modernization. United front work departments at all levels throughout the province should effectively strengthen ideological and political guidance, closely coordinate with departments such as education, science and technology, and human resources and social security, and support the Western Returned Scholars Association in playing a greater role.

Tan Tieniu pointed out that over the past three years, NJU has adhered to the guidance of the spirit of President Xi Jinping's important reply letter, vigorously promoted the glorious tradition of serving the country through overseas study, and continuously improved the effectiveness of serving the country. He looked forward to taking this event as an opportunity to further promote synchronization between the university and local areas, jointly fulfill missions and create the future in implementing the spirit of the reply letter and serving national development, and work together to strengthen ideological guidance, scale scientific and technological heights, build talent highlands, and tell China's story well. Tan Tieniu hoped that everyone would strive to be practitioners of moral education, breakers of scientific and technological barriers, guardians of cultural heritage, and communiators of China's story, endeavoring to write a new chapter of serving the country through overseas study and making new and greater contributions to comprehensively advancing the building of a strong country and the great cause of national rejuvenation through Chinese modernization.

NJU Western Returned Scholars Association and Suzhou Western Returned Scholars Association signed a cooperation agreement. Wang Yang, Member of the Standing Committee of Suzhou Municipal Party Committee, Director of the Municipal United Front Work Department, and Secretary-General of the Municipal Party Committee, and Jiao Ruihua, Vice Chair of NJU CPC Council, witnessed the signing.

Representatives of outstanding returned overseas-educated individuals delivered speeches. They shared their exploration journeys and practical achievements in scientific research, moral education, innovation and entrepreneurship, cultural heritage, and other areas, calling on overseas-educated individuals to work together toward rejuvenation, integrating personal efforts into the pulse of the times and youthful struggles into the practice of building a strong country.

"Contributing to national security is the strongest belief in my heart." "I have returned! To dedicate my light and heat to my beloved motherland." In the micro-drama Dialogue performed by NJU students, predecessors such as Cheng Kaitai and Li Siguang sent heartfelt messages to young students, hoping that they would dedicate their efforts to the cause of the country and the nation. Encouraged by their predecessors, young students strengthened their confidence, resolved to strive vigorously to scale new heights, and advance bravely to continue the glory. Suzhou Western Returned Scholars Association presented the chorus Backbone of the Republic, and the event concluded with passionate singing.

On the day of the event, attending guests visited the Exhibition of Achievements in Serving the Country after Overseas Study. This exhibition, planned by the Jiangsu Western Returned Scholars Association, focused on showcasing the exploration and achievements of overseas-educated individuals from Jiangsu Province in the fields of scientific and technological research, innovation and entrepreneurship, cultural communication, teaching and education, and other areas.

The special event was hosted by Lu Yanqing, Vice President of Nanjing University and President of the NJU Western Returned Scholars Association. Gu Wanfeng, Executive Deputy Director of the United Front Work Department of the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee; Liu Bujian, Deputy Director of the United Front Work Department of the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee; Wen Yu, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee, Director of the Publicity Department, and Director of the United Front Work Department of NJU; relevant officials from the United Front Work Department of Suzhou Municipal Party Committee and the Party Working Committee of Suzhou High-tech Zone (Huqiu District Committee); representatives of members of various levels and types of Western Returned Scholars Associations in Jiangsu Province; and relevant department and college officials and faculty and student representatives from NJU participated in the event.
