Tan Zhemin greets 2025 undergraduate freshmen

The registration of the 2025 undergraduate freshmen is in full swing, with young people from all corners of the country gathering at Nanjing University. On August 31, Tan Zhemin, President of NJU and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences visited the freshman reception site on Gulou Campus to learn about the welcoming work, greet the 2025 undergraduate freshmen, and visit faculty, staff, and volunteers.

Upon arriving at the reception point Nanjing-Helsinki Institute in Atmospheric and Earth System Sciences, Nanjing University (NJU Nanjing-Helsinki Institute), Tan Zhemin greeted the newly arrived students. This year, NJU Nanjing-Helsinki Institute welcomed the third-batch of 96 undergraduate freshmen, injecting new vitality into the Institute. "Welcome!" "Where are you all from?" "How do you feel about being in Nanjing?" Tan Zhemin engaged in cordial conversations with new students and asking about their initial experiences and impressions of NJU. He encouraged the students to bravely embrace their new university life, study hard, continue to progress, and took photos with the faculty and students.

At the main freshmen reception station, Tan Zhemin paused at the electronic welcome screen to check the real-time registration statistics of the 2025 undergraduate freshmen and learned in detail about the batch arrangements and service guarantees for new student registration. To give each freshman a unique enrollment memory, this year's electronic welcome screen added a personalized feature—students can input their student ID to display their name on the screen, generating a personalized welcome interface.

Additionally, a special member joined this year's welcoming team—the robot "Little NJU Whale." Developed independently by an alumni enterprise team with core members from NJU's School of Artificial Intelligence, it is connected to the university's "Little Blue Whale" intelligent assistant platform and can provide freshmen with process guidance, university history explanations, and campus tours. "Do you know how many campuses NJU has?" Tan Zhemin interacted with the "Little NJU Whale" robot, listening to it narrate the university's history.

At the "Green Channel" registration point, President Tan visited representatives of students with financial difficulties and presented them with "Care Packages" carefully prepared by the university. These substantial packages contained not only stationery, books, and daily necessities, but also carried the school's deep concern and expectations for every student. Tan Zhemin encouraged them to start a new life, strive to become talents who contribute to the country, and contact the university promptly if they encounter any difficulties during their time at school. NJU implements precise and heartwarming financial aid measures throughout the entire education process, fully supporting and guaranteeing the learning and growth of students with financial difficulties, ensuring that every student can have a colorful youth at NJU.

Along the way, Tan Zhemin also met freshmen Gu Mingyu from Xingzhi College and Meng Fanqi from Bingwen College. Gu Mingyu told Tan that 15 years ago, when he first entered the Hankou Road gate, his father Gu Zhengyi was graduating with a master's degree from the Computer Science Department. Influenced by his father, he enjoys reading and thinking, and eventually followed in his father's footsteps to NJU. Meng Fanqi, who ranked first in the liberal arts category in Jiangsu Province's college entrance examination this year, explained that his strong interest in ancient text studies, his admiration for NJU's School of Liberal Arts, and his love for Nanjing's culture led him to firmly choose NJU's Strong Foundation Plan.

There are many more reasons for choosing NJU. At the Dream Bonding Station, freshmen from all over the country waved their dream appointment cards. They had made promises to "meet at NJU" during their high school years, and today they arrived as promised, realizing their dreams.

Tan Zhemin also visited student volunteers from the Admissions Publicity Volunteer Association, learned about the work progress in detail, and thanked them for enthusiastically telling NJU stories and conveying the NJU spirit.

At the Jianxiong College reception point, Tan Zhemin greeted newly registered students, reception staff, and freshman Pre-School Camp volunteers. The volunteers introduced their work content, including material preparation and registration guidance, to President Tan. "Hello, President! We came to NJU through the National Special Program. We participated in the Pre-school Camp both to experience the school atmosphere in advance and to do something for our fellow students." Chen Ruyu from Jianxiong College and Zhao Ziyan from Xingzhi College reported their original intentions for participating in the Pre-school Camp to Tan Zhemin. Tan thanked everyone for their contributions to their fellow students, and hoped that everyone would stay healthy and grow happily at the university.

Entering the Nanyuan No. 2 Dormitory, Tan Zhemin cordially communicated with new students and their parents. To facilitate parents' rest, each dormitory specially set up a "Parents' Rest Area," showing NJU's care in details.

At the Yuxiu College reception point, eight students celebrated their birthdays on registration day. Tan Zhemin presented birthday gifts to these students with "double happiness," extended warm birthday wishes, and took photos with everyone, adding an unforgettable memory to the beginning of their university life.

University leader Li Bin and heads of relevant departments participated in the visit.

During the freshman registration period, to ensure the smooth registration and enrollment of the 2025 undergraduate freshmen, relevant functional departments collaborated closely and took multiple measures to create a warm and convenient welcoming environment. The university set up reception points at Nanjing Station and Nanjing South Station to guide freshmen to the Gulou Campus. Upon arrival at the campus, Party member pioneer posts and volunteer teams provided route guidance, answered questions, and helped with luggage carrying for freshmen and their parents. Security and logistics support were meticulous, providing care and supplies. Nearly a thousand student volunteers were recruited during the welcoming period, with two volunteer support points and a "Volunteer Home" specially set up on campus. Each point was prepared with sufficient materials to serve the freshmen well while also protecting the rights and interests of the volunteers. The university also organized various on campus cultural activities during the welcoming period to help freshmen integrate into university life more quickly, enhance their sense of belonging to NJUy, and perceive the 120-year academic heritage and NJU spirit through interaction.
