Wang Hua leads delegation of CAS Shanghai Branch to NJU

On September 12, Wang Hua, Deputy Secretary-General of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and Director of the CAS Shanghai Branch, led a delegation to visit Nanjing University. Tan Tieniu, Chair of NJU CPC Council and Academician of the CAS, met with Wang Hua and his delegation on Xianlin Campus. Both sides engaged in discussions on deepening the integration of science and education and talent cultivation in the new era.

Tan Tieniu extended a warm welcome on behalf of NJU to Wang Hua and his delegation, expressing gratitude to the CAS Shanghai Branch for their long-term concern and strong support for the development of NJU's educational endeavors. He briefly introduced NJU’s "one university, two cities, four campuses" layout and the new developments in the integration of multiple disciplines including humanities, sciences, engineering, and medicine. Tan Tieniu noted that since NJU signed a strategic cooperation memorandum with the CAS last year, the cooperation and exchanges between our university and relevant institutes of the CAS have become closer and more fruitful. He pointed out that this visit by Wang Hua and his delegation will create more opportunities for cooperation and expand the scope for collaboration. He emphasized that the Shanghai Branch is an academic stronghold of the CAS with strong research capabilities, geographically close and closely linked with NJU. In the future, both sides can further stimulate internal momentum and play a demonstrative leading role in strategic cooperation between the university and the academy through academic discussions, personnel exchanges, joint platform construction, and collaborative research projects, making new and greater contributions to supporting and serving the building of a strong education system, a strong science and technology nation, and a strong talent pool, thus living up to President Xi Jinping's expectations.

Wang Hua expressed deep gratitude for NJU's long-term support. He stated that NJU has achieved remarkable results in discipline construction and talent cultivation, providing many outstanding talents to the CAS. He praised NJU students for their practical work style and solid foundation, describing them as the high-quality student resources that the CAS eagerly seeks. He pointed out that currently, China's scientific and technological innovation has embarked on a new journey to accelerate the achievement of high-level self-reliance and self-strengthening, and higher education has entered a new stage of high-quality development, which places higher demands on deepening the integration of science and education and cultivating top scientific and technological talents. He hoped that both sides would further expand the space for cooperation and achieve resource sharing, especially strengthening academic exchanges in multiple research fields such as life sciences, information sciences, and material sciences, solidly advancing organized scientific research to address major national needs, strengthening collaborative research, deepening the integration of science and education, jointly building an innovative talent cultivation system, improving the quality of talent cultivation, and working together to fulfill the responsibilities of the times in accelerating the achievement of high-level scientific and technological self-reliance and self-strengthening.

Prior to the meeting, both sides held an exchange symposium. Lu Xiancai, Vice President of NJU, chaired the meeting. Both sides engaged in lively discussions on topics such as graduate student recruitment and talent cultivation, faculty team building, and scientific and technological innovation system construction. The participants unanimously agreed that they should leverage their respective advantageous resources to explore the establishment of closer cooperation mechanisms, integrally advancing education development, scientific and technological innovation, and talent cultivation, contributing wisdom and strength to help build a strong natino in science and technology and continuously demonstrate the capability to support Chinese modernization.

Wang Yan, Deputy Director and Party Leadership Group Member of the CAS Shanghai Branch, and Li Bin, Assistant President and Director of the General Office of NJU, accompanied the meeting. Representatives from relevant departments and schools of NJU participated in the exchange and discussions.
