“Scientific Excursion and Research Training on Carbon Neutrality in Central and Northern Europe” Program concludes

From August 14 to 23, 2025, Kuang Yaming Honors School and the School of Sustainable Energy and Resources, Nanjing University, jointly organized the "Scientific Excursion and Research Training on Carbon Neutrality in Central and Northern Europe" program. Centered on the theme of "Healthy China, Carbon Neutral", the program was launched under the leadership of Dean Zhu Jia and Vice Dean Zhao Liang of the School of Sustainable Energy and Resources, with Chair of Kuang Yaming Honors School CPC Council, Zhou Yuan and faculty members from both schools. A group of 20 undergraduates from Kuang Yaming Honors School, School of Physics, School of Atmospheric Sciences, and School of Environment visited Sweden and Norway to conduct scientific fieldwork on cutting-edge carbon neutrality technologies.

During their stay in Sweden, the delegation visited Link?ping University's main and Norrk?ping campuses, which is renowned for its deep integration of industry, university, and research institutes, as well as its interdisciplinary research environment. Under the guidance of Professor Gao Feng, a NJU alumnus and full professor at Link?ping University, the team visited the Inorganic Semiconductor Thin Film Laboratory, the National Supercomputer Centre, and the Laboratory of Electronic and Photonic Materials. Associate Professor Wang Feng, systems expert Peter Bortas. Associate Professor Ching-Lien Hsiao delivered in-depth presentations to the students. In addition, the team visited LEAD, recognized as the best business incubator in Sweden, and engaged in discussions with student entrepreneurs. Researchers from Swedish innovation company Epishine AB held a deep exchange with the delegation on the applications of organic photovoltaic thin films and technologies for harvesting low-intensity indoor light. At the Norrk?ping campus, Professor Mats Fahlman, Director of the Organic Electronics Laboratory, and Assistant Professor Yang Chiyuan guided the scientific expedition. They led the team through the Organic Electronics Laboratory, Biology Laboratory, and Printed Electronics Innovation Laboratory, and delivered lectures on Sweden’s latest research progress and technological applications in the field of carbon neutrality.

At the University of Bergen in Norway, facilitated by Professor Yang Tao, Academia of both the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences and the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters, the team engaged in rich scientific learning activities. Professor Martin A. Fern? of the Department of Physics and Technology warmly welcomed the delegation and hosted the academic exchange. Zhou Yuan introduced Kuang Yaming Honors School's achievements and experiences in cultivating top talents, expressing the hope for further collaboration in interdisciplinary training and project-based courses. Professor ?yvind Frette, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, introduced the University of Bergen's history and development. As one of Norway's most representative higher education institutions, with nearly 200 years of academic tradition, the university is distinguished in marine research, climate studies, earth sciences, and global development. Seven experts from the university’s physics, chemistry, and applied mathematics highlighted on innovative practices of Digital Twin technology in carbon neutrality research and engineering, and shared ongoing projects such as visualized CO? geological storage and collaborative progress of the Norwegian Research School on Hydrogen and Hydrogen-Based Fuels (HySchool). These exchanges provided the NJU delegation with inspiring case studies and potential avenues for collaboration. The visit was jointly guided by Associate Professor Hu Jinglei and Lecturer Zou Dawei from Kuang Yaming Honors School, together with Lecturer Lü Guangxin from the School of Sustainable Energy and Resources.

As an international, cross-school scientific expedition, this program not only represents an innovative practice in global interdisciplinary education by Kuang Yaming Honors School and the School of Sustainable Energy and Resources, but also exemplifies the integration of education, science, and talent cultivation in service of China's "Dual Carbon" goals. Through on-site visits and academic exchanges in Northern Europe, the students have broadened their international perspectives, enhanced their scientific innovation capabilities, and gained deeper insights into local governance systems, science and technology policies, as well as history and culture. Looking ahead, the two schools will continue to expand collaborations with world-class universities, elevate the level of international education, and closely align with national strategies and the mission of building a strong education system to cultivate more outstanding talents with innovation spirit, social responsibility, and global vision—contributing NJU's strength to the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
